I recently found out about a MMO that got shutdown in 2012 and all the art, assets, and animations were released under the Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal License, which pretty much means you can use their assets for anything.
A lot of the assets are in flash and .svg form, so it isn't all that easy to obtain assets that work with GS. I've spent a lot of time working on getting workable art, so if you have any questions, PM me and I'll be happy to help.
Details can be found here: http://www.glitchthegame.com/
I whipped up a parallax world template using some of their art.

is there any way to extract the files without owning flash?

@BigDave @floatingwoo Flash is only needed for the .fla files. The .swf files you can view instantly by dragging into your web browser and you can extract the files into .png format using a neat tool called ShoeBox. Also, most of the content is available as sprite sheets on the Glitch Content Page, which you can then use the ShoeBox tool to turn those sprite sheet animations into a squence of .pngs. Sadly the .fla files require CS 5.5 or better to open. But only a small amount of the content offered is not in .swf format as well.
