I'm going with resizing my hero's sprite from 32x32 to something bigger. I've drawn the new hero sprite at a high res so that it can be shrunk down to any size below that. I might go with 48x48 with a sprite that double that as the new hero sprite to keep the mechanics as close as possible to the original, or I could make the character bigger but have to redraw all the dragons sprites to higher def to match.
