What Software do you use to Create Characters?

I'm looking for a free software thats not too impossibly hard to use. I would prefer it 8-bit, but higher is okay. I want to make a simple game, since i never made one before. Just let me know if you know a good software thats free. Thanks

Pixen is Free and perfect for 8bit not a lot of options but can make single image and animations with ease.

Pixen is free for 8 bit. Gimp is free as well as inkscape. Both of which are great programs. If you have $50 a month, you can get a subscription to adobe and get everything they have. Good luck!

It looks like it's only available for mac. I have windows. It's also 9.99$ Am i looking at the wrong one?
