Yes, you have to publish it as an ad-hoc. Read tutorials - it's explaind there.

It is impOrtant to understand you must have an apple developer license to test on your iOS device. Period, no ifs ands or butts.

No you dont need iTunes Connect to test on your device. Though that does come with a developer license. It has nothing to do with testing. Only publishing to the itunes app store.
