Physics Engine inconsistent? Have others noticed? Solutions?

I have a physics game. When the scene loads stuff falls, bangs around, etc. Sometimes things fall and bounce one way, sometimes they fall and bounce the other. I made a spring. 9 out of 10 times the actor just bounces up and down on the spring forever. 1 out of 10 times it takes a strange bounce to the side.
Have others noticed this. Is there a way to make the physics consistent?
