That's why it's good to follow http://twitter.com/GameSalad. They thankfully posted, "Our host is down, they're working hard to get everything up and running again" about 4 hours ago.

I'll remember this from now on! I thought there was gonna be a huge update or something. I guess in GameSalad you can't check for an update unless the site is up.

I'm skeptical. Amazon is a big site. My site — http://Photics.com — doesn't have six hour outages. I was imagining that the GameSalad team was working late, preparing the website for the new update.
Maybe just the GameSalad download is hosted with Amazon. That seems odd to me too.
Something doesn't seem right here. Either there's more to the outage, or their web hosting is screwy. A six hour outage is far from normal.

Not at all...some hosts will be down all night for maintenance especially if you're on grid servers.

Then they should get a better host.
If there's going to be a maintenance outage, then the GameSalad team should have known beforehand. The community could have been notified. "Hey everyone, the site's going to be down on Sunday."
Since they're not actually selling anything right now, and the community isn't really saying too many nice things, maybe the GameSalad team enjoyed the six hours of silence. HA HA.

thats assuming it was a scheduled maintenance outage. It may well have been an unexpected server crash for example.
In my previous life as an IT manager for a software house, unexpected things DO happen.
I remember the time that 2 discs on my main file server's raid array failed at the same time. It took a whole day to order replacement discs, and a half a day to rebuild the machine (as the raid could not be rebuild from 2 failed discs). It was at that point, we found out that the backup tapes had been failing on a daily basis for 6 months, but without showing an error message.
needless to say, me and my team got into a little bit of trouble over that one ;o)
More troubling is you couldn't submit a game or create an adhoc at that time. Since my iPhone viewer won't install for some reason I was doing an adhoc but no go last night.

Sorry I never got around to explaining the outage. We do host game files through amazon S3, but our servers are hosted elsewhere. Last night there was a storm that knocked out the power lines and knocked a tree across the main road into the data center. Unfortunately, they also had a failure of one of their backup generators. Let's just say Murphy's Law was in full effect for our data center.
This and a few other failures have caused us to re-examine our hosting infrastructure, and to start building out a better redundancy and failover plan.

But i also had the fear that they just shut down GS cause of everybody leaving
Oh well, back to template crafting

We'll be sure to keep everyone posted.
