Animating character in background

How would someone propose doing this:

Animating an animal climbing up and down a tree in the background, and looping that animation so it climbs up the tree, then back down, wash, rinse, repeat

    Make it part of the original animation file would be easiest. Just like the leaves. It's less work on the engine too. So you would draw the tree with the animal going up/down etc...
